Washington, DC, April 22, 2004.- The International Finance Corporation and the World Bank, are sponsoring the first Housing Finance Roundtable for the Andean Region. Being held in Lima, Peru, on April 27-28, 2004, the event will explore constraints to development of housing markets in the region and programs that increase access to housing using capital markets, mortgage insurance, and other innovative mechanisms. It will gather top government officials and private sector representatives from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Entitled Building Sustainable Housing Finance Markets through Improved Policy and Increased Private Sector Participation, the roundtable is being organized by UNIAPRAVI, the trade association of housing finance and other sectoral institutions in the Americas.  Interbank (Peru), JP Morgan
(New York), and Ernst and Young (Peru) are joining the event as corporate sponsors.

Marcos Brujis, IFC’s Manager for Business Development, Latin America and the Caribbean, will open the event on behalf of the World Bank Group, followed by a keynote opening address from Carlos Bruce, Peru’s minister for Housing, Construction, and Sanitation.  Guillermo Babatz, director general of Mexico’s Federal Mortgage Association, will be keynote speaker.

The roundtable will feature contributions from key international and regional experts, practitioners, and policymakers, with representatives from Moody's Investor Services, JP Morgan Chase, GMAC, Ernst and Young, Fannie Mae, Wharton Business School, and Countrywide, as well as Su Casita from Mexico and Mivivienda from Peru.  IFC will host a private sector workshop to present housing finance projects that it has helped develop or support in Latin America, including with Titularizadora Colombiana and Hipotecaria Su Casita.

Senior government officials and policymakers working in the Andean countries’ housing sector are expected to attend, as well as high-level representatives of the private sector, including land-use agencies, mortgage companies, banks, institutional investors, rating agencies, and developers.  

The roundtable will be open to the press. The agenda follows. Simultaneous (English/Spanish) translation will be available.
